    Ron Manson, Photographer

Enhancing old photographs has become easier with recent developments in digital photography. Given that truth, it still takes effort from other sources to accomplish. The process involves the original photographer’s work, the group posts of the original online images and digital photographic enhancements.

I became interested in restoring my hometown Piqua historic photographs after coming across online posts of these two groups:

    “Piqua History 2.0”
“You know you are from Piqua when”.”

I used my knowledge of digital photography to enhance the photos and share them with the groups. I have also included some clippings I had saved from my days at THE PIQUA DAILY CALL.

The following comments from the posts inspired me to continue to look for historic images online and enhancing them with the intent of sharing them online.

“Turning these into color is magical for my eyes!”
    “These are great Ron”
“Your enhancement brings it to life!”
“That’s the best picture of any locks I’ve ever seen…”

I collected many of the images posted online and included them in this magazine. I hope others will enjoy seeing them as much as I have producing them.

    Covington, Georgia

Ron Manson returned to fine arts photography in 1995. After earning a BFA in photography at Ohio University in 1965, he served as a public affairs officer in the U. S. Navy and in public affairs/management at Southern Bell. Upon retirement from BellSouth he combined a renewed interest in fine art photography with digital technology. A charter member of the Southern Heartland Art Gallery, he began his photography career in 1957 as the chief photographer for his hometown daily newspaper, The Piqua Call. In 1997 he converted The Covington News to digital photography and developed an extensive portfolio of Newton County photographs. He is a Sigma Delta Chi/Society of Professional Journalists and Georgia Press Association award-winning photojournalist, and his work is on display in several venues. His digital fine art photography technique is derived from his years as a photojournalist and his formal education in fine art photography.
