    About the Book

    Edit

Henry Ford began as a farm boy who could not abide drudgery. The sight of a lumbering steam engine on a Michigan road in 1876 lodged in his mind a question that never left: why should men and horses toil when machines might think and act in their stead? From that single, stubborn curiosity he forged a path few dared imagine.
Self-taught, debt-averse, and impatient with speculation, Ford built the Ford Motor Company on the plain principle that business exists to serve. The Model T, priced low enough for the common man, the moving assembly line that slashed production time from twelve hours to ninety-three minutes, the five-dollar day that doubled wages overnight—these were not gestures of philanthropy but calculations of mutual gain. When crises came, he turned inward, streamlined, paid cash, and emerged independent.
Adapted from Ford’s own My Life and Work, this condensed edition distills a life of practical moral reasoning into lessons young readers can carry forward: question waste, master one’s resources, place service before profit, and govern oneself with steady resolve. In an age quick to borrow and quicker to defer, Ford’s example stands plain and unyielding: true independence is earned through intelligent, persistent work.
For students, educators, and families who believe character and ingenuity remain the surest foundations of a free society.
